Private Practice

Katherine Dillon, Founder of The Seeds of Change (TSOC), has specialised in personal growth and learning for children, young people and families for over 18 years. Katherine has continued to develop her approach through this time and has, increasingly, been asked to develop work with adults in the field of mental health and overall well-being.

TSOC Acorns only

Virtual and Face to Face Programmes for adults and families.

I founded of The Seeds of Change, over 18 years ago, and have worked with many children and young people. Over the last few years, I have been increasingly asked to work with adults, which has felt a huge privilege, often supporting teachers and mental health carers in their work.

Originally, I trained in the psychodynamic approach at Leicester University. This enabled me to gain a deep insight into how exposure to early negative life experiences can have lasting and detrimental effects on individuals and their family systems.

Since then, I have trained with the British Psychological Society in the approach of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which focuses on problem solving, is solution focused and encourages the client to do work themselves, away from formal sessions.

I have also studied and trained in Gestalt Therapy, which primarily focuses on the present moment rather than past experiences and can help the clients become aware of emotional blockages that may be causing  them to struggle in their everyday lives, helping to reduce those blockages and release energy.

I work in a very Person-Centred way, supporting my clients, always holding them in positive regard, with a belief that every individual has the power to heal themselves, that they can find their own answers to their problems and find solutions, discovering new pathways into making the right choices for themselves.

All my training experiences over the years have enabled me to create the unique ‘TSOC Approach’ which is embedded in how we work with a horse as the co-coach. This has proved to be a very effective way of working and has helped over seven thousand people, to date.

I accept that for some people, working with horses, as a therapeutic tool, does not work or appeal to them. So, I am developing my practice further, forming a more conventional therapeutic ‘talk based’ relationship with my clients, to enable them to move forwards in their lives.

I work with the techniques described above and, instead of the influence of the horse, embed mindfulness, breathing and relaxation techniques practices.

Each programme is developed and adapted for the client’s needs and objectives.

What I can help with; Anxiety and Depression, Separation and Loss, Bereavement, Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Relationship difficulties. Long term illness and associated conditions.

Client feedback:

“In brief ……. Our son was in his 3rd year at Uni, had a breakdown and was contemplating suicide.

We had been down the GP/hospital/CBT route, where their main objective was to pigeon hole him and give him “happy pills”.  He refused medication, wanting instead to deal with his anxieties and negative feelings, and to understand why this had happened to him.

We didn’t know what to do/where to go next, then a friend told me about Katherine, who helped youngsters struggling with anxieties, bullying etc.  Our son had been bullied when he was younger – had this contributed to what was happening now?

Katherine agreed to meet with us and evaluate our son and his needs.  To our relief she thought she could help.

Objectives:

We started weekly sessions to try and unlock what was happening inside his head.  Katherine was clear that this was a family affair, and encouraged the attendance of at least one family member at all discussions.  Hence acquiring an insight into our family dynamics, while keeping us fully involved in everything that was happening.

I remember in the early days Katherine told him she would give him “lifestyle tools” which he could put in his “toolbox”, and bring out when he needed them.

Over time and many tears, even evaluating diet and sleep patterns, small steps were made.  His body language started to change.  Most importantly he could be himself with Katherine, no judgements, no pressures, no ridicule.  Just positive suggestions, adapting ideas if they weren’t working, never giving up.  All the time delving into the underlying reasons for his feelings.

After some time, an idea began to develop, then the biggest step of all, he knew what he wanted to do, thanks totally to a seed Katherine had planted.

Plans were made, colleges visited and Katherine supported him with every anxiety he was feeling along the way, with practical ideas and discussions afterwards of how he had felt.

Outcome:

We visited Katherine for a year.  Our son went off to college and has completed a 3-year course.  He had his ups and downs, but with our support and the “tools” Katherine had given him, he did it!

Why I would recommend Katherine:

  • Will not pigeon hole you.
  • Listens, researches and always finds a way round obstacles.
  • Compassionate, genuinely cares.
  • No secrets, whole family involved.

Katherine is a remarkable woman with great insight into the development of youngsters who are finding it difficult to find their place in the world.”
