Functional skills are essential competencies in English, maths, and digital skills that equip individuals for both work and personal life. These skills are crucial for success in education and the workplace, helping people understand and apply knowledge in real-life situations.

Key aspects of functional skills:

  • Focus on application:

Functional skills emphasise the practical application of knowledge rather than just memorising facts.

  • Real-world relevance:

They are designed to help individuals navigate everyday tasks and challenges, including those in the workplace.

  • Essential for various contexts:

Functional skills are valuable for pursuing new careers, educational opportunities, and for general personal growth.

  • Levels of qualification:

Functional Skills qualifications are available at different levels, ranging from Entry 1 to Level 2, according to City & Guilds. Level 2 is often equivalent to GCSE.

Examples of functional skills:

  • Literacy: Reading comprehension, writing effectively, and applying grammar and punctuation.
  • Numeracy: Applying mathematical knowledge to solve real-world problems, including calculations, data handling, and understanding measures.
  • Digital literacy: Utilising technology effectively for communication, research, and problem-solving, including using hardware and software.
  • Communication: Expressing oneself clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Problem-solving: Identifying and addressing issues, thinking critically, and making informed decisions.
  • Organization: Managing time, resources, and information effectively.

Additional Information

Level 2 employability skills qualifications focus on developing the abilities needed for entry-level jobs and further education. These qualifications often cover a range of skills, including communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and practical workplace skills, as well as soft skills like time management and self-awareness. They are designed to bridge the gap between education and employment, equipping individuals with the confidence and practical skills employers seek
