Explaining Equine

Horses can provide that ‘third person’ element in the therapeutic alliance, making it easier for many clients to more naturally connect with themselves to be able to express and begin to link with what they are feeling and experiencing at that present time.

TSOC Acorns only

Horses have the most amazing ability to create boundaries for themselves and those around them, very much a herd creature, accepting and acknowledging a natural hierarchy, Yet humble, honest, willing and kind. Playful and inquisitive, affectionate yet still with the ability to be their authentic self, always giving honest and helpful feedback to those working around them.

Horses form part of our beautiful natural world, they have been around for thousands of years helping man through wars, working the land to provide essential food, providing means of early transport and throughout all of time, being a loyal and steadfast presence in so many peoples daily lives.

For many people traditional ‘Talk therapy’ can be challenging, building up a therapeutic relationship with one person can take time, sometimes certain unconscious barriers make it impossible to form a connection with the Therapist in what can feel a fairly sterile indoor environment. Horses can provide that ‘third person’ element in the therapeutic alliance, making it easier for many clients to more naturally connect with themselves to be able to express and begin to link with what they are feeling and experiencing at that present time. Horses can become our mirror, reflecting back to us and giving instant, non judgemental and unconditional feedback making the ability for transferrable awareness and learning possible for the client. Horses know only truth, living in the moment makes the approach a very mindful experience. It is the task of the skilled therapist to enable the client to understand what is occurring through observations and feedback, enabling the Client to become more self aware, confident developing a greater resilience to work through their personal challenges.

Often clients of all ages will feed back to us that they begin to feel more empowered as their programme develops, an awareness of a improved self worth and confidence, learnt new strategies to enable them to make the small shifts often needed to afford real change.
